Your Invitation to Enlist in the GMMACS

If you are interested in the interpretation of American military history of the late 19th Century, and the Indian Wars, you may be interested in "enlisting" in The General Miles Marching and Chowder Society.

Contrary to what the tone of our name may imply, we do set high standards for ourselves, and those persons wishing to join must meet them. We frankly want to discourage casual observers who just like to belong to groups. We want moreover, to insure that our group is dedicated, authentic, and a credit to those we represent. We require prospective members to be male, 18 years of age or older, and in fairly good physical condition. Recruits should be capable of doing light work and marching with appropriate field gear for at least five miles.

There are two steps in becoming a full member of the GMMACS. The first is a "recruit" or provisional membership. To become a recruit member, you need a particular year and unit for your historic impression, and then to assemble the basic uniform and equipment appropriate to that impression. You may then submit your application to the Benzene Board for review. Upon approval the applicant is granted recruit membership, which entitles him to attend an encampment within two years. At the encampment they are assigned to the "awkward squad" for instruction in the school of the soldier and other duties of a 19th century recruit.

During this guest encampment recruits have the opportunity to observe the GMMACS and get an idea of what kind of organization we are. At the same time this is a chance for "us" to become acquainted with a recruit. During the encampment recruits are expected to follow the rules of the organization and the instructions of the non-commissioned officers. Failure to do so will mean immediate expulsion from the encampment, and termination of recruit status.

Upon successfully completing their first encampment, recruits may be invited to apply for full membership. As a recruit member, they will have two years to complete their acquisition of required uniform and equipment. They will also be expected to become involved in Society projects, vote on budget and encampment issues, and pay the dues. Upon completion of their outfit, they will present themselves to the Benzene Board for evaluation. Upon their approval the recruit will be made a full member of the Society, with all the rights and privileges that may go with it.
